At first thought murdered, a cowboy eventually reported as struck by lightning while on the range at Palomas near Hillsboro, during an impressive storm on June 20.

There were two marks on either side of his face and his clothes were shredded. His pocketknife was found to be magnetized and the mark of his button was found branded on his chest.

He had been an employee of former sheriff Max Kahler.
