On Tuesday, August 26, 2008, Clifford E. Casey packed up his truck for his final deer hunt on Fox Mountain with the gang. Cliff passed away at home peacefully, surrounded by his loving family after a valiant, six month fight against a brain tumor. His final wish was to remain at home surrounded by his family, near his beloved garage, garden, cherry tree and where he was able to receive visits from his family, dear friends and neighbors. Cliff faced his final illness as he did everything else in life; with courage, honesty, dignity, quiet grace and that ever present stubborn streak. 'Casey' was born Clifford Earl Casey, January 14, 1925 in Oconto Falls, WI to Earl K. and Ella Whiting Casey. In 1930 the family moved to Reno, settling on Locust Avenue. His Dad, Earl, (pop Casey) worked with some of the Callahan's on a ranch near Washoe Medical Center, raising cattle and growing vegetables to feed the patients at the hospital. Later his father Earl went to work for the City of Reno in the street department and his mother, Ella, raised the four children. Cliff quit school in the 8th grade to help support the family. Just after his 18th birthday, Cliff was inducted into the U.S. Army where he proudly served his country. After only being stateside for four months, he was sent into battle during W.W.II, serving as Staff Sergeant in the 148th Infantry Regiment as a rifleman. He saw combat in the Asiatic Pacific Theater for 2 years and 3 months in Bouganville, Luzan and the Northern Solomon Islands. He directed rifle fire of 12 men, destroying enemy personnel and capturing enemy positions. On December 24, 1945 he returned stateside. Upon honorable discharge from the Army on December 24, 1945 he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Bronze Arrowhead and the W.W.II Victory Medal. Cliff was a proud veteran and was a member of the Sparks VFW, Post #8605 and auxiliary, holding several offices and was a volunteer at the Reno Air Races on behalf of the VFW Post. He was also a long time member of the NRA.

After serving his country, Cliff worked briefly for the City of Reno with his father, having then built a home on Lester Ave. for his family, working as a master carpenter before going to work for Levy and Zentner delivering produce to Hazen, Fernley, Fallon, Gabbs, Battle Mountain, Hawthorne, the Army Depot and Schurz. Cliff then went back to work for the City of Reno where he retired in 1986 as a supervisor in the street department. After retirement, he and his wife Betty had more time for their vacations, visiting 48 states, bottle hunting adventures and their fishing excursions, happily pulling their camp trailer to anyone of their numerous destinations. An avid outdoorsman, Cliff looked forward to bird hunting, whether it be for dove, duck, sage hen, chukar or pheasant and his deer hunting trips with family, friends or the 'gang' (you all know who you are) in his early years at Red Rock and later on Fox Mountain near Gerlach. He loved sharing stories and some of his fondest memories (and funniest stories) were of his hunting trips throughout the years.

He was predeceased by his parents, his loving wife of 49 years Betty Mae Richards Casey ('Babe'), her brother Fred A.(Fritz) Richards, Jr., Betty's parents, Fred A. and Laura V. Richards, and his sisters, Gertrude Scott, her husband Fred and Betty Block and her husband Kenneth. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Callahan of Reno and her children, Erin Callahan of Fernley, Cynthia (Cyndi) Callahan- Post (Tim) and their children; great-granddaughter, Brittni and Shaeli Grider and great-grandson, Mason Post all of Reno; Cyndi and Erin's father, Ray Callahan, whom Cliff shared many wonderful hunting memories, a strong friendship and proudly joined Ray in helping to build his family a beautiful home on Mount Rose; son Michael A. Casey(Peggy) of Longview, WA and his children: Shawn and Todd Casey (Anne) of Reno and their mother, Geraldine (Geri) Casey of Sparks. He is also survived by his sister, Elsie Casey of Reno, as well as numerous nephews, nieces (many of whom Cliff became more than an Uncle but a mentor), cousins and many dear friends as he truly never met a stranger. Additionally, Cliff is survived by his loving companion and friend of 12 years, Helen 'Dee' Valverde Felt and her children Ron, Kathy, Karen and Hope, and their families who welcomed Casey into their fold as part of the family, as we did them. Dee and Cliff enjoyed many wonderful vacations, drives to wherever the mood struck him that day, dinner with friends, camping, family gatherings, visiting the Sparks Marina and of course, their evening ritual of watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune together.

The family would like to thank the Circle of Life Hospice who treated him as a friend, with dignity and respect. (Debbie, Phyllis, Beryl, Dawn, Elizabeth, Cindy and the entire staff who helped us so much in his final days.) Without your assistance, guidance and support, the family would have had a difficult time fulfilling his final wish which was to remain in his home. Special thanks to his doctors during the last six months who gave him such excellent care. He was treated not just as a patient but as a friend, with dignity and respect. Thank you to Doctors Rosen, Dapra, Vacca, Kelley, Dardick and their entire staff, as well as Dr. Bloomfield, his Hospice physician who had been Cliffs doctor for many years, before retiring to work for Hospice, and what a blessing and comfort to Cliff to have him on board with Hospice. Heartfelt thanks to his wonderful neighbors, Steve, Gilbert, Wayne and Barbara for their kindness and friendship to Casey throughout the years and unquestioned support during his final days. To Jimmy Evans and Fritz Richards, Cliffs buddies as well as Nephews and Tim Post, more than a grandson through marriage but in heart, you have all been a tremendous strength to us and Dad (Grandpa). We are ever grateful to and for, the three of you. The list of friends and acquaintances Cliff made, throughout his years in Reno, and beyond, would go on forever but to those not mentioned, thank you for all of your kind words and thoughts during his illness. Thank you to Umphress Accounting, Linda's employer for the past 10 years, (Pete and Kevin Umphress) for their kindness and understanding during the past six months of Cliff's illness, making adjustments so she could assist her father with doctor visits, tests, radiation and other needs.

At his request, Cliff will be cremated and put to rest with his wife, Betty in the Masonic section at Mountain View Cemetery. As Cliff did not want any formal funeral services, a memorial service is being planned and notification of date, location and time will be forthcoming. In support of organizations that were dear to Casey's heart, donations in his name may be made to Veteran's of Foreign Wars, Post #8605, 5460 Reno Corporate Dr. VFW Room #106 Reno, NV 895112250, Circle of Life Hospice, 1575 Delucchi Lane, #214, Reno, NV, 89502, or consider planting/donating a cherry tree in his memory.

Farewell Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, Patriarch, Patriot .... Friend, until we meet again. You will forever be loved, admired and missed beyond measure. Your words and lessons are ingrained and ever present in our lives. Thank you for your example in living a life to be proud of, for being a role model in all things and the epitome of goodness and integrity.
