ALEXANDER, Joel, Hebrew reader, born in Posen Province, and immigrated with his wife and eldest daughter to Brooklyn, NY. He was the first permanent rabbi of Congregation Baith Israel in Brooklyn. Union troops having captured Memphis, Tennessee, in 1862, Joel Alexander moved there with his family to become the reader at the Orthodox congregation Beth El Emeth in 1863. He died on 10 August 1866 at age 42 and was buried in Memphis.
