Her Algerian Muslim family settled in the Paris suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis when she was small; her father was soon sent to prison, and she was raised for five years by a Belgian foster family. She returned to Paris, and was gang-raped at 14; she remained silent until learning that two of her friends had suffered the same fate from the same Muslim gang that targeted Muslim girls they felt were too "westernized". She pressed the legal system to take action, and the gang members were sent to prison for eight years. After undergoing psychotherapy, she became a youth worker, and founded the organization "Ni Putes Ni Soumises" to protect the rights of young girls not protected by Muslim society, which often shuns girls who have been raped. She published "Dans l'enfer des tourmantes" (roughly translated "The Hell of Gang Rape) in 2002. She died of stomach cancer. She has been named one of the "Mariannes"...new faces of France. Ecole Samira Bellil, in I'lle-Saint-Denis, named in her honor, was opened in 2005.
