John G. Hollenback of Williamsport passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at the Williamsport Home. "Jack" as John was affectionately known, would have been 85 on March 30.
The son of Alfred and Lola Geist Hollenback, Jack was born in Shamokin, PA, in 1923. In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Arlene Hollenback of Seattle, Washington, and his maternal uncle, Leo Geist of Chicago, Illinois.
Jack was a graduate of Williamsport High School, Class of 1941, and enrolled in Dickinson Seminary, which later evolved into Lycoming College.
During World War Two, Jack served in the Army Signal Corps, being stationed on Guam.
He continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he received his Bachelor's Degree and then his Master's Degree at the Wharton School of Business Administration.
Jack began his teaching career at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, in 1951, where he taught for two years. 1953 marked the first year of Jack's dedicated and fulfilling career as a Professor of Business Education at Lycoming College, a career that spanned more than three decades. Jack became the backbone of the department and during the later part of his tenure, the Chair Person. Achieving "Senior Member" status Jack proudly carried the Lycoming Mace as Marshall at many commencements.
Jack pursued and understanding of history, art, music and literature throughout his life. Always a voracious reader, he frequented museums, loved opera, Broadway shows and concerts. He believed in a firm liberal arts background and instilled in his students the need to pursue the arts far beyond the business curriculum. Jack was also a skilled photographer, specializing in nature shots in the environs of the Susquehanna Valley, which he always felt fortunate to call home.
Jack was active in Kiwanis, Rotary, Williamsport Consistery Lodge 755; served on the Board of Directors for the Community Concerts and James V. Brown Library, where he served as treasurer. Jack was also a past member of the Ross Club.
Prior to his residency these past two years in the Assisted Living and later the Constant Care Unit at the Williamsport Home, Jack could often be seen cruising about town in his sport coupe, portable oxygen tank at hand, greeting people with his signature friendly smile. Jack was appreciative of the kind and attentive care he received from the staff of the Williamsport Home.
Through his knowledge, his teaching, his upbeat personality and pleasant disposition, Jack enhanced the lives of many people during his lifetime. Indeed a very rich legacy.
