James Monroe Barbee, Sr. was the fourth son of Charles Andrew Barbee, Sr. and Mollie Virginia Cornwell. He was of the Old School Baptist faith and married Dorothy Marie Posey on May 2,1933 and they had six children: James Monroe Jr., Ray Edward, Alyce Mae, Elton ("Bill") Leroy, Larry Oliver and Charles Ashby. James and Dorothy were married 52 years at the time of her death on December 9, 1985. The Barbees raised hogs and chickens and had a huge garden to feed their family. James retired in 1975 from the Virginia Dept. of Transportation as a superintendent with more than 21 years of service. James "Pops" in his better days loved to dip herring, garden, read western books and watch T.V. At the time of his death, James had been a resident for almost 10 years at Oak Springs Nursing Home in Warrenton.
