Laverne was born near Dennis, Parker County, Texas on September 26, 1904 to George Barnett and Myrtle McNutt Barnett. She had 2 younger sisters, Dymple and Olene. She attended Weatherford Junior College. She married Wyley Wilburn "Jack" Hill on December 3, 1923, and they had 2 children, Robert Chandler and Marjorie Nelle before divorcing. Laverne's family moved to Huntsville, Texas and Laverne completed her college degree at Sam Houston State College. She began a career as a social worker which would take the family to Floresville, Kenedy, and finally Karnes City, Texas. She lived the rest of her life in Karnes City and is buried in the Karnes City cemetery.
