George Washington Lady, Sr., was a son of William Lady and Jane Treadway. He married Anise G. Poore about 1853 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. We may never know the exact date, because virtually all records of Sullivan County except for the deed books went up in smoke 22 September 1863 when a shell hit the courthouse at Blountville. For the same reason we may never know the exact date of his birth. We choose Aug 1830 because that is what is listed in the 1900 census--the only census that asked for the month of birth--and is supported by the 1870 and 1880 census enumerations. George and Anise had eight children:
