Civil War: 26th Independent Battery, New York Light Artillery

George W. Ainsley (Ansley) was born in Geneva, Ontario County, New York, in September 1834. He was a resident of Seneca, Ontario County, New York, by 1850 (1850, 1860 US Census; 1855 NY Census). George W. Ainsley, 28, enlisted as a private for 3 years at Rochester, New York, October 8, 1862. He was mustered into the 26th Independent Battery, New York Light Artillery, on February 25, 1863. He was promoted to corporal May 27, 1865. Corporal Ainsley was mustered out at New Orleans, Louisiana, September 12, 1865. He married Rebecca E. Reinochl in 1874. They were living at Grant, Hamilton County, Nebraska, in 1880 (1880 US Census). He filed for a Civil War veteran disability pension in Aurora, Hamilton County, Nebraska, July 12, 1889, and received certificate No. 480,669 (1890 Veteran Schedule; Pension File, NARA). He moved to San Diego County, California, where he registered to vote in 1892 (1892 Great Register). After his death Rebecca applied for a Civil War widow's pension in California February 25, 1902, and received certificate No. 538,017.
