Jayne Schmidt, age 78, lost her courageous battle with cancer on Aug. 21, 2008.
Betty Jayne Brown was born in Colfax, Washington to Elige W. Brown and Lois (Rose) Brown. Early years were spent on the family farm in the Palouse Country near Colfax. Later, her parents moved to Harrison, Idaho to continue farming where she graduated from Harrison High School. During her high school years she was a thespian, cheer leader, journalism editor, and was a member of 4-H clubs. Jayne was interested in all outdoor sports, especially fishing and bicycling.
After graduation, whe was selected by the Farmers Union of Kootenai County as a candidate for 'Miss North Idaho'. They decided that Jayne was an example of wholesome, genuine, American youth.
Jayne attended Eastern Washington State College in preparation for a career in elementary education. Her first teaching position was at Rose Lake, Idaho where she met her future husband, Stan, who was Superintendent of Schools. They were married in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and the marriage lasted a few days short of 56 years. Both received new positions and moved to Portland where she received her degree in education from Portlnd State University in 1958. She taught fourth and fifth grades and was an administrative assistant at Sunnyside and Alameda Elementary Schools of Portland School District #1 until her retirement in 1989.
Jayne was an inspiration to her students with an unwavering positive spirit! Moreover, she had a genuine concern for her colleagues and friends alike.
Jayne was a local and state president of Alpha Delta Kappa - an international honorary sorority for women educators. Also, she was a lifetime member of the Oregon Retired Teachers Association. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star (Worthy Matron, Syringa Chapter #18, Harrison, Idaho - 1956; Valiant-Sellwood Chapter #92, Portland - 1970). Jayne was also active in the Daughters of the Nile and served for several years as a volunteer for the Shriners Hospital.
Some of Jayne's avocations included travel (worldwide), sewing, crafts, and gardening.
Jayne is survived by her husband - Stan; two sons - Stephen of Portland and Randy and daughter-in-law Liz; two grandchildren - Jennifer and Katie of Sacramento, California. Her younger sister, Dona preceded her in death, also from cancer. A service was held on Friday, Aug. 29, at Riverview Abbey in Portland.
