Spencer M. Ainsworth was a graduate of Madison University, the forerunner of Colgate University in New York State; he taught in the South and served in the Confederate Army. His first child, Willie Herman was born September 1867 in Winchester, Tennessee, some 13 miles from Sewanee, site of University of the South, which though established in 1857, had its first college level work in 1868. It is not known, for certain, whether or not he taught there.
