Son of David D Barnes (1731-1811) and Rachel (Leonard) Barnes (1727-1805).

His paternal grandmother was Zeruiah Eager Barnes.

Second husband of Joanna (Jenckes) Russell.

Children: included Frances L Barnes, Anna Eliza Barnes Pratt Burgess, George Leonard Barnes, Freelove Sophia Barnes Arnold, and Joanna Scott Barnes Richmond.

He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1780. He was a part in the very first United States Supreme Court decision in 1791, West v Barnes. He was later appointed by President Jefferson as judge of U.S. District Court for Rhode Island, and served from 1801 until his death in 1812.
