OBIT: Weed Press June 29. 2008
Emily Gerene Burns, 80, passed away peacefully at home June 19, 2008. She was born in Cherokee County, South Carolina December 30, 1927, to the late William and Mary (Price) McCraw.
The youngest of four children, Emily was raised and attended schools in South Carolina. She had an adventuresome spirit that led her to California in her late teens.
She was married briefly to Joe S. Duffey and together they had a son, Michael John (and Donna) Burns of Mount Shasta.
In 1950 she met her husband of 40 years, Cecil F. Burns, who preceded her in death in 1990. Together they had three sons, the late Larry Philip Burns, Robert Stephen (and Kendra) Burns of Whittier, California, and Samuel Patrick Burns of Coalinga, California.
Emily was a bookkeeper working for many businesses throughout her life. Being a "Navy wife" she raised her family near Naval Bases in Honolulu, Hawaii and southern California.
Upon the death of her husband, she followed through with their dream of returning to Chesnee, South Carolina where she lived until November 2007. She then moved to Mount Shasta to live with her son Michael and family.
Emily was a gracious person who will be remembered for her loving and giving spirit, her love of nature and animals, and her faith in her Lord Jesus.
In addition to her sons, she is survived by grandchildren, Michael (and Kaila), Riley and Robby of Mount Shasta; Ken of Whittier, Eric of southern California, Brittany of South Carolina; and two great grandchildren.
She also leaves treasured friend and 'daughter' Amalia (and Richard) Balch of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews in South Carolina. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, June 27 at 10 a.m. at Edgewood Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Mercy Hospice Mt. Shasta, 914 Pine Street, Mt. Shasta, CA 96067
