Wife of Lt Col Vernon L Ernst

Irma Louise Ernst, 71, of Hamel, formerly of Springfield, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis.

She was born April 21, 1929, in Alhambra, the daughter of Erwin E. and Emma Marie Blase Schumacher. She married Vernon L. Ernst in 1952; he preceded her in death in 1990.

Mrs. Ernst was a homemaker and resident of Springfield from 1966-93. She and her husband were owners and operators of The Spirit Stop in Springfield for more than 20 years, retiring in 1993. She was a member of Golden Agers of Hamel, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel, Ladies Aide of St. Paul's Church and the treasurer of Aid Association for Lutherans Branch 1795.

Survivors: two sons; three daughters; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Elmer Schumacher and Hilbert Schumacher; and two sisters, Helen Klausing and Ruth Ernst.

Services: St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel. Burial: Camp Butler National Cemetery.
