Jonathan Anthony was 23, and living in Hamilton, Marion Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as the 3rd Corporal of Co. F, 4th Iowa Cavalry, on Oct 14, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 23, 1861. At his own request, he was reduced to the rank of Private on Jan 15, 1862.

Anthony was taken prisoner on June 22, 1863, at Bear Creek, MS. He was exchanged on Sept 6, and returned to the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 14, 1863.

On Nov 6, 1863, Anthony was discharged from Co. F of the 4th Iowa Cavalry when he was commissioned as the 1st Lieutenant of Co. E, 60th USCT (Infantry). He later resigned his commission on Dec 4, 1864.

Anthony applied for his pension on March 18, 1890. His application is #762,091, and his certificate #576,655.
