Florence Winifred Fowler, eighteen months old, was drowned in a plumber's trench in front of her home at 411 East Nineteenth street last night while playing in the yard. The ditch was dug to repair a leak in a water main, and filled up with water, when the little girl fell into it. The water was about thirty inches deep. The accident happened at 6:30 last night.
The body was found in the hole and rescued. Physicians were promptly summoned, and they in turn appealed to the fire department for the use of the pulmotor carried on the fire apparatus. Even this instrument failed to resuscitate the child. It is believed that she was in the pool but a few minutes. There were no witnesses to the accident.
It is likely an investigation will be made to fix the responsibility for the cause of the death of the child.
