She was born August 11, 1932, in Itta Bena, MS. She was a member of the Amvets Post #6, Auxiliary. Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ethel Tolbert, brother, Jeleanna Tolbert, sister, Eva Purdue, loving daughter, Eva Marie Bennett-Pittman, and son, Ronald Bennett.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Sam Bennett, Sr.; children: 2 sons, Sam (Mamie) Bennett, Jr., and Frank Bennett, both of Gary, and 6 daughters, Barbara (Charles) Bennett, Ethel Watkins, Phyllis (Ed) Bennett-Richardson, Cynthia Bennett, Rosemary (Henry) Carter, all of Gary, and Jacqueline (Timothy) Greenlaw of Augusta, GA; 25 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; special friends, Addie Williams, Bernice Bonds; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
