Mary B. Godfrey, 84, a volunteer and equestrian who was the former wife of radio and television personality Arthur Godfrey, died May 22 at Loudoun Memorial Hospital. She had pneumonia and heart disease.
Mrs. Godfrey, a longtime resident of Leesburg, was born in Galveston, Tex. She moved to the Washington area during World War II and was an executive secretary at NBC radio in Washington when she met Godfrey. They married in 1941 and were divorced a year before he died in 1983.
For decades until they sold the property in 1979, the Godfreys lived at Beacon Hill, a 1,970-acre Leesburg estate where they raised horses and entertained dignitaries.
Mrs. Godfrey rode in the Loudoun Hunt. Past her 70th birthday, she continued to participate in 100-mile rides over the Virginia countryside.
She had done volunteer work at Leesburg Hospital.
Survivors include two children, Michael Godfrey of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Patricia Schmidt of McLean; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
