DPD Veteran George Ramsey dies,

Veteran Dyersburg Police Officer, Lt. George Harrell Ramsey, died Friday morning of heart failure at Methodist Health-care-Dyersburg.
Ramsey, 60, was taken to the hospital late Thursday night after complaining of chest pains and was pronounced dead around 6 AM Friday.
Services will be at 1:30 PM Sunday in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial will be in Sorrell's Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at 4:30 PM today at the funeral home.
A 28-year police veteran, Ramsey joined the department June 8, 1970, after serving in the U. S. Air Force and working with the Kroger Company and in insurance sales.
Ramsey attended Dyersburg State Community College and graduated in 1972 with an associate of science degree in criminal justice. He was promoted to sergeant July 1, 1973, and became a squad leader and mid-level manager July 1, 1984. He continued to serve in that position until his death.
Ramsey was a member of First Baptist Church in Newbern, a member of Newbern Lodge No 285, and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He leaves his wife, Joyce Ramsey of Newbern; a daughter, Renita Lynn Baker of Dyersburg; two sons, Timothy Wayne Ramsey of Newbern and Johnny Earl Ramsey of Baltimore; two sisters, Helen Dowdy and Ruby Waller, both of Dyersburg; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Joe Moody, Jim Gray, Greg Youree, Dwight Paschal, Kenny Luckett, Brent Tharpe, David Fisher, David Fowlkes and John Gardner. Honorary pallbearers will be Rudolph Vaughn and Archie Criswell.
Fellow officers were saddened by the sudden loss of an officer who meant much to them.
"We're really going to miss him," said Criswell, Assistant Police Chief. "George was one of the most honest men I've ever met."
"This department is really lucky to have had George for as long as we did," he said. "I'm losing a friend as well as a police officer."
Patrol Captain Roger Dudley said Ramsey's love for law enforcement and the community will be hard to replace.
"George was one of the strongest parts of the department," he said.
"He was a fair officer to not only the public but to the officers."
Paschal, a patrol officer who served under Ramsey the past five years, said the veteran was like family to him.
"Here at the police department, most of the officers are pretty tight, so this is a tough loss," he said.
"George was well-known and liked by people all over town. "He was one of the best."
