Sgt. 1st Class Larry Gabriel Flores, Jr., entered into eternal rest on Aug. 8, 2008 in Palestine, Texas. Born Dec. 21, 1981 in San Antonio, SFC Flores was preceded in death by his father, Larry. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; children, Trinity Marie and Larry Gabriel III; his parents, Charlie and Martha Gonzalez; two sisters, Patricia Flores and PFC Linda M. Gonzalez; his in-laws, Alex and Cindy Duron; three brothers-in-law, Jacob Duron, Jason Duron, and Alex Duron, Jr. and his wife, Tiffany; nephew, Jay Alexander Duron; niece, Emily Morgan Duron; grandfather, George Rodriguez; two grandmothers, Maria Rodriguez and Mattie Gonzalez; numerous aunts, uncles, other family members, loving friends, and brothers and sisters at arms.
SFC Flores enlisted in the United States Army Delayed Enlistment Program in 2000 during his senior year of high school in Somerset, Texas. Following graduation, he entered active duty as a wheeled vehicle mechanic and attended Basic Combat Training and Advance Individual Training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He was then assigned to the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kan. as a vehicle mechanic, and later to Fort Huachuca, Ariz., where he served as a senior mechanic and later as shop foreman. His operational unit time included two combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan as a mechanic, senior mechanic, and shop foreman.
In December 2004, SFC Flores volunteered for recruiting duty and was assigned to the Houston Recruiting Battalion in Houston, Texas. He served as a recruiter in the Deer Park Recruiting Station, where he earned the battalion's Top New Recruiter award for Fiscal Year 2005, and was named a member of the battalion's exclusive Order of the Saber club for exceptional recruiting and leadership in April 2005. In early 2006, SFC Flores changed jobs, becoming a full-time recruiter and taking over as the Army recruiting station commander in Palestine, Texas. He continued to prove that he was one of the best recruiters in the region by being named the battalion's Top Recruiter for Fiscal Year 2006, and leading his station to earn the battalion's Top Small Station award for Fiscal Year 2007. In November 2007, he was selected to command a larger recruiting station in Nacogdoches, Texas, which he led until his death.
SFC Flores was considered a "fast-tracker" -- a Soldier that had moved quickly up the ranks -- going from brand-new private to staff sergeant in less than five years. At the time of his death, SFC Flores had been selected for promotion to sergeant first class with just over eight years of active service; he was only waiting for his promotion orders to arrive. During a special military memorial ceremony held Aug. 14, 2008, he was posthumously promoted with an effective date of his date of death, and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
