*Note: After Margaret (Adam) Henderson's first husband, David Henderson died in St. Louis, MO. of a heat stroke (or cholera), Margaret became the plural wife of her sister Agnes' husband, John/James Easton. It was the Mormon custom that no woman of age remain unmarried, and this was most likely preferable to having a husband chosen for her by the Mormon Church. From this child, one child was born: John Alexander Easton who later changed his last name to Henderson. John Alexander Henderson was b. May 29, 1856 in San Bernardino, San Bernardino County, CA. and d. Mar. 28, 1938 in San Bernardino, San Bernardino County, CA.

Mary Adam Henderson was born in Scotland. When she was a small child (age 2), her parents, David and Margaret packed up their family of six children and joined the Easton and extended Adam family to sail from Glasgow, Scotland to Liverpool, England to America, the land of promise.
The ship crossed the Atlantic, to the south of the Florida Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico. From there, the family took a boat up the Mississippi, settling in St. Louis, Missouri.
They planned to stay about a year, long enough to save up for provisions, and a wagon and oxen team for the trip west. Mary's father, David, died shortly after from heat stroke (or cholera) while working in the coal mines near St. Louis and was buried in what is now called Dogtown.
After her father's death, Mary's mother, Margaret, became the plural wife, for a time, of James Easton (the husband of Margaret's sister). They made the trip west to Salt Lake, then to Cedar City and finally settled in San Bernardino, Ca.
Mary married, first, William R. Levic(k) in San Bernardino, Ca. They were divorced June 15, 1874. She then married Thomas H. Ashcroft.

Mrs. Mary Ashcroft, wife of Thomas Ashcroft of Corona, and one of the old time settlers of San Bernardino, died in the California Hospital in Los Angeles at 6 o’clock last evening, the result of an operation. Her husband and her brother, Officer John A. Henderson of this city, were with her at the time of death.
Mrs. Ashcroft had been ill for a month at her Corona home, and a week ago was taken to Los Angeles for treatment, an operation being the only hope. She was 55 years of age and a native of Scotland.
Mrs. Ashcroft was raised in San Bernardino and enjoyed friends and acquaintances without number throughout the valley. She had lived in Corona for the past several years.
Besides the husband and Mr. Henderson of this city, she leaves a brother, William McD. Henderson of Rialto; another brother, D.G. Henderson of Imperial, and two sisters, Mrs. William Roberts or Corona and Mrs. Margaret Yager, whose home is on the Rialto terrace.
Mrs. Ashcroft was a strong and noble character, and an earnest Christian woman. She was one of the active members of the Baptist church in Corona, and known far and near for her good deeds and wide influence for the right.
The funeral will take place from the late residence in Corona, probably tomorrow. Interment will be in the San Bernardino cemetery.
