Mrs. Leona E. Gerdes, 73, of 207 Yakima Street, a resident of Wenatchee for the past 37 years, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
Mrs. Gerdes was born August 17, 1891, at Wallahalla, North Dakota. She graduated from the University of Grand Forks in 1916 with a degree in education. On June 21, 1920, she married Frank A. Gerdes, and in 1927 they moved to Wenatchee.
She was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Surviving are: her husband; one son, Col. Ralph F. Gerdes, Hamilton Air Force Base, California; one daughter, Mrs. B.W. (Jeanne) Ball, of Van Buren, Arkansas; five sisters and one brother; Mrs. Oscar Chaput and Miss Yvonne Vondal, both of Long Beach, California; Mrs. W.G. Crandall, Denver, Colorado; Mrs. A.B. Krause; Mrs. Antonia Wilson; and Eugene Vondal, all of North Dakota; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Leona E. Gerdes - Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:30 o'clock Friday evening in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Patrick Byron, officiant. Requiem High Mass will be celebrated at 10 o'clock Saturday morning in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the rev. P.J. O'Sullivan, celebrant. Concluding services and interment will follow in the Wenatchee Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Betts Funeral Home.

They were married on June 21, 1920 at the St. Boniface Church in Walhalla, ND.
Leona was the mother of twins: Ralph Francis Gerdes (4/10/1923 - 9/1/1997) and Jeanne Harriet Gerdes Ball (4/10/1923 - 3/16/1989) and the grandmother of Gary and Bradley Ball of Van Buren, AR and Chris, James ("Jamie"), and Nancy Gerdes of Redlands, CA.
