Landscape Architect. Ellen's father was (Brev. Brididier General) James Biddle. Her father served in the U. S. Army during the Civil War and continued with his military career afterwards. Ellen spent her growing up years in various places in the west with her parents, some in Arizona and Texas at military posts. Her mother was somewhat of a frail woman and there were times because of her health and also due to safety issues on the frontier they would not be with her father. Some of this time was spent at her grandfather's home, McGowan Farm outside of Elizabeth, New Jersey. (Her grandfather was Capt. John McGowan who was the captain of the ship "Star of the West", which was fired upon when attempting to take supplies to Fort Sumnter in Charleston Harbor just before the Confederates fired at Sumnter)
It was during her visits to the family farm that she became aware of nature and all it had to offer.
Eventually she was sent to boarding school in Baltimore, Maryland and it was in these years that she did a lot of "doodling" about designing gardens.
She was at what was known as Harvard Annex, a liberal arts girls school in Cambridge, Massachusettes that she met and married Louis Shipman.
She became more involved in landscaping with the ensuing years. She and Shipman divorced in 1910 and she concentrated more on her passion of landscaping.
She landscaped many of the prestigious homes, such as Fynmere, the Cooperstown, New York of the Cooper family, Graycliff House, which was built by Frank Lloyd Wright, and numerous others.
Over her 40 year career in the gardening and landscaping world she was featured in many of the popular women's and gardening magazines of the time. She also was a very popular lecturer on her chosen profession.
