Mamie Hunt Atkins Withers, age 82, widow of Henry Clinton Withers and Robert Dixon Duke, died Saturday, January 15, 1994, at Pine Meadows Health Care Center, in Lexington, Kentucky, after an extended illness. Born in Jessamine County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Joel Morehead Atkins and Amanda Mae Hunt Atkins. She attended McDowell School and Lexington Senior High School and graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1932. She worked at Kresge Dollar Store and taught school from 1958 to 1977 at Johnson, Constitution and Julia R. Ewen Elementary Schools.

An active member of Calvary Baptist Church, she belonged to the Senior Adult Choir, Mizpah Sunday School Class and Senior Adult Program. She was a Donovan Scholar and held memberships in the American Association of University Women, University of Kentucky Alumni Association, Spindletop Hall, Bell House Seniors and the Fayette County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of the 2050 Club at the Emerson Center, where she lived for 12 years. She had recently lived at Heritage Hall, in Lawrenceburg, and briefly at Pine Meadows Health Care Center, with several stays at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Thanks are given to the personnel of each who treated her with so much kindness and love, as well as to the many friends who loved, supported and appreciated her fierce determination and unflagging optimism.

She is survived by: three daughters and a son-in-law, Judith Stewart Burris, of Lexington, Betty Ann Gaddie, of Panama City, Florida, and Juanita and Edward L. Wells, of Paris; 10 grandchildren, Mark and Catherine Wells, of Paris, Elizabeth and David Jones, of Lexington, Mary Kathleen and Gary Kelley, of Leesburg, Georgia, Michael Gaddie, of Panama City, Florida, Kimberly Ann Burris, of Lexington, James Clinton Burris, of Anderson County, and Todd Withers Burris, of Whitefish, Montana; four great-grandchildren, Allison and Aaron Jones, of Lexington, and Benjamin and Samuel Wells, of Paris; and dear relatives by marriage, Brenda, Bob, Kevin, Kyle and Evelyn Higgins, of Louisville. Besides her two husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by: a daughter, Kathleen Amanda Withers; three aunts, Sofronia, Elizabeth and Mayme; two brothers, Joseph Franklin Atkins, Sr., and Newell Gray Atkins; a nephew, Joseph Franklin Atkins, Jr.; a son-in-law, David Ralph Burris; and a great-grandson, Grant Robinson Wells.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Lexington Cemetery by Dr. Robert G. Baker. Friends may call at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home from 1:00 until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and 9:00 until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, January 21, at Calvary Baptist Church Chapel and at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 23, at the Lexington Friends Meeting House, 1504 Bryan Avenue.
