Florence Hendrick Wray (Mrs. Edwin Newton Wray)

SHREVEPORT, LA- Mrs. Florence Hendrick Wray, died at her home on August 5, 2008. Visitation will be Saturday, August 9, at 10:00 a.m. in the parlor at First Baptist Church followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Wray, a native and lifelong resident of Shreveport, was born on December 14, 1919, the daughter of Lois Smith Hendrick and Dr. John Alexander Hendrick. She was a graduate of C.E. Byrd High School, attended Sophie Newcomb College and graduated from Centenary College of Louisiana. She was married to Edwin Newton Wray on November 4, 1939. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for over eighty years, serving in many capacities as a Sunday School teacher, as president of the Women's Missionary Union and in many other areas of Christian service.

She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, a sustaining member of the Junior League of Shreveport, a member of Centenary's Women's Endowment Quorum, and a Board member of the Salvation Army. She belonged to the Shreveport Club, the Demoiselle Patron Group, Opera and Symphony Guilds, and was formerly on the Board of the Cotillion Club.

Her hobbies included traveling and playing bridge. She and her family had many wonderful trips together, and she enjoyed playing cards with friends in her bridge clubs.

Mrs. Wray was preceded in death by her husband, parents and her brothers, Dr. John A. Hendrick, Jr., and Dr. Robert S. Hendrick.

She is survived by her children, son, Edwin Newton Wray, Jr., and his wife, Suzanne, and daughter Lois Wray Rowe and her husband, Kirby; three grandsons, William Kirby Rowe, III, David Newton Rowe and his wife Alex and their daughter Emily Florence, and John David Wray and his wife Angie and their son Tyler of Stephens City, Virginia; two granddaughters, Lauren Wray Ostendorff and husband Seth and their daughter Olivia Claire, and Jennifer Wray Baldwin and husband Ray and their daughters Brooke Lydia and Rachel Lynne of Fort Worth, Texas; her sister Mrs. May H. Chidlow; and her sisters-in-law Norma Ann Hardy and husband General Spencer Hardy, Mrs. John A. Hendrick, Jr., and Mrs. George D. Wray, Jr.; eleven nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly; and her beloved dachshund Skippy.

The family extends special thanks to Helen Peterson, Dorothy Bush, Dorothy Boulware, Dorothy Johnson, Stella Lively, and Katie Simpson for their loving care and devotion over many years, and to the staff of St. Joseph Hospice.
