While his name is listed as Wilson Hugh in his father's family Bible, and his birth date is given as 1871, the tombstone has it Hugh Wilson and 1870. I think 1870 is probably right, given the birth dates of his nearest siblings. My grandmother referred to him as "Uncle Wils." (I used to think she was saying "Uncle Wilkes.") He was the ninth of fourteen children born to Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910) and his wife Mary Jane Taylor (1836-1882).

H. W. Beachum married Regina Belle Simmons, who was a sister of Annie E. Simmons, who had married his uncle Daniel K. Beachum. (All of them are buried here at Hopewell.) H. W. and Regina had ten children, but I only have nine names: Martin L. Beachum (1890-1891), Clyde William Beachum (1891-1975, m. Sarah Ruth Stegall), Ila B. Beachum (1894-1894), Ferrell Wilson Beachum (1895-1978, m. Alice Flavia Carpenter), Hester Mercedes Beachum (1897-1972, m. Thomas Vernon Carpenter), Bessie Louise Beachum (1899-1958, never married), Zelma E. Beachum (1900-1987, m. Clyde Lee Tyson), Nezer Hawkins Beachum (1902-1992, m. Sadie Hildreth) and Addie Estelle Beachum (1906-1990, m. Jodie S. Carpenter).
