He was the son of William Alexander Brown and Sarah Bannister Brown. In 1855 they moved to Illinois briefly and then to northwest Missouri until they came to Reno County, Kansas in 1881. John Douglas Brown married Louisa Hymer in Nodaway County, Missouri, in Sep 1860. They had a house in Hutchinson at 213 W. 7th. Their six children were Will, James, Ella, Nettie, Herb and Robert Brown. John Douglas Brown was a carpenter, merchant, and farmer. He was very handsome, with dark hair and vivid blue eyes. He had a good sense of humour and he liked to crack jokes.
