She was born in Georgia but moved to Jacksonville following her marriage in 1944. She retired from Southern Bell after completing over 35 years of service. She was a long time member of Arlington United Methodist Church, The Friendship Class and the Super Seniors.
She was also a Life Member of the North Florida Chapter Telephone Pioneers of America, where she served in many areas of leadership, including the office of Chapter President.
Doris was predeceased in 1992 by her husband of 48 years, Bruce Newton. She is survived by two sons, and daughters-in-law, Donald and Sarah Newton and Marc and Kathy Newton, four grandchildren, Cari Bumgarner, Daniel Newton, Joanna and Jarrod Newton, and two great grandchildren, Mason and Mackenzie Bumgarner. Also surviving her are one brother, John H. McDonald and five sisters, Clara Brown, Lila Long, Lois Harless, Grace Harper and Lucy Lanier.
The family would like to express their gr atitude to the physicians and nurses for their kind and compassionate care and to everyone who has regularly given blood to the Florida-Georgia Blood Alliance for your gift that sustained her for some precious additional time.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 from 4 PM until 6 PM at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd. So.. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at Arlington United Methodist Church, 1400 University Blvd., N. on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004 at 2 PM. The service will be conducted by Dr. .Kenneth Minton. Burial will follow in Arlington Park Cemetery.
