We believe Louisa Jane Beetley was born in Warren County, Pennsylvania to a James R. Beatty or Beetley who was born about 1806 in Virginia according to federal census records. Federal census records also show his surname to be spelled as "Beatty" at times. However, all of his children are recorded consistently as "Beetley". Autosomal DNA records (like those at Ancestry) consistently tie our family to other BEETLEY / BEATLEY families with origins in Northumberland, VA. Louisa's mother is seen as either "Tryphena" or "Caroline" with one record listing her mothers maiden name as "Penny" out of Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. However, in other records we find her as Tryphena MARSH. We believe MARSH is the correct surname. Louisa's brother Lyman stays in Iowa and serves in the Civil War. Her brother Edwin moves to the Fairbury, Nebraska area and also serves in the Civil War. Her brother Francis marries Adelia "Della" Soper and moves to Greeley, Colorado where they are buried. As of 06/12/2021 we find multiple records that Louisa's mother was Tryphena MARSH ... probably called Catherine (middle name maybe?) ... her surname shows up in delayed birth and marriage records for some of her children. We also find in the Feb 1900 Cherokee Iowa paper that she may have been murdered .... see the Thursday, Feb 15, 1900 - Cherokee Weekly Times (Iowa) - Page 3 ----- "Mrs. Jane Smeltzer was found unconscious and in a dying condition on the floor of her home in Redfield. Opinion is divided as to whether it is a case of murder or death from natural causes." Our family lore (when I was a boy) included the story of a member who had been "strangled with a silk stocking" .... Rest in Peace Louisa Jane.
