BROOKLET -- Raiford L. "R.L." Akins, 86, died late Friday at Bulloch Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

The Bulloch County native was a retired farmer and a deacon of Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Cleo M. Akins, Brooklet; a daughter and son-in-law, Fostine A. and James E. Davis, Brooklet; a son and daughter-in-law, Rawdon L. and Carolyn Akins, Statesboro; a brother, the Rev. George R. Akins, Savannah; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held today at 3 p.m. at the Hodges-Turner Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dorsey Horton officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mike Howard. Burial will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Bethel Baptist Church.

Visitation will begin at 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Remembrances may be made to the Bulloch County Unit of the American Cancer Society or to the Bethel Baptist Church.
