Benjamin enlisted on 31 Aug 1861 in Co. B, 81st Reg OVI. He was discharged on 26 Sept 1864.

Benjamin married Sara A. "Sally" Crosley on 30 March 1859 in Allen Co. Ohio, where they made their home. Benjamin and Sally had at least six children, but possibly only two who lived to adulthood. After Sally died in 1879, Benjamin married Mary Fry in 1881.
