Shirley Elam Davis Beatty, 71, of North Knollwood Drive died at 10:20 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Mrs. Beatty retired from Cummins Inc. where she worked 37 years. She was a member of Columbus Free Methodist Church and Royal Neighbors of America and loved gardening, flowers, crocheting, reading and jigsaw puzzles.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Lane Loman officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday. Entombment will be at Garland Brook Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana or the American Lung Association.

Born in Louisville, Ky., Feb. 7, 1937, Mrs. Beatty was the daughter of Chester A. and Lilly Mae Caudill Elam. She married David Lynn Beatty July 30, 1983.

Survivors include sons, John (Tammy) Davis of Elizabethtown and David (Eve) Davis of North Vernon; a daughter, Kimberly M. (Mick) McDermott of Columbus; grandchildren, Dawn Davis, Kristy Davis, Kenda Lynn (Derrick) Maschino, Joshua (Alicia) Davis, Keane Davis and Ryan McDermott; a great-grandson, Jonah Davis; a stepson, Mark (Sandy) Beatty of Columbus; and a sister, Joyce Proctor of Louisville, Ky.

Mrs. Beatty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Sept. 12, 2001; sisters, Charlotte Jones and Sharon Trail; an aunt, Margarette P. Dodds, who she called "Mom" and who was her legal guardian and raised Shirley until she was an adult; and an uncle, Norman Ray Dodds.

Mrs. Beatty's daughter-in-law, Eve Davis, was organist and vocalist, and granddaughters, Dawn and Kristy Davis and Kenda Lynn Maschino, and son-in-law, Mick McDermott were vocalists.

Entombment was at Garland Brook Mausoleum. Pallbearers were David, John, Joshua and Keane Davis and Mick and Ryan McDermott.

Mrs. Beatty died Monday, July 21, 2008, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
