PFC Sheldon L. Gulseth was a combat engineer serving with A Company, 26th Engineer Battalion, Americal Division. On the morning of March 1, 1971, Gulseth was a member of a team participating in a road sweep operation for a resupply convoy near the village of Thach Hoa, 12 miles northwest of Tam Ky city in Quang Tin Province, RVN. After completing their mission, the team got aboard one of the sweep trucks while the convoy proceeded to its destination. At 9:55 AM, the engineers' truck detonated a concealed enemy land mine. Gulseth died after sustaining injuries to his abdomen. In the days following his death, Gulseth's unit held a memorial service in his honor.
