William Jay was born 3 March 1857 in Bedfield, Suffolk and christened 19 April 1857 at Beccles, Suffolk. He was the son of Daniel and Dinah Mutimer Jay.
William married Eliza Pearl 30 November 1877. William's sister, Hannah Jay, was a witness.
Eliza was christened 23 March 1858 at Monk Soham.
William and Eliza lived at Bolton Cottage, Bedfield, Suffolk.

In the 1881 census, William is 22, an agricultural worker, Eliza is 22, and children are William 3, Daniel 2, and Frederick 9 months. They are living at Bolton Farms, Bedfield, Suffolk.

Her skirts kept her afloat. William could not marry Anna because they were in-laws (Church of England rules).
