George Washington Lowe served with Co. H 3rd Alabama Regiment of the Confederate Army. He was wounded at the Battle of Gettsyburg and was captured at Petersburg and imprisoned at Lookout Point Maryland until Lee's surrender.

During the Civil War the spelling of George's last name was changed from Loe to Lowe. He kept this Lowe spelling after the war.

George married Martha Marshall and she was the mother of his first six children. She died giving birth Sept 4, 1897 to baby Mattie. No record has been found on her as of yet.
