He was born in Schonenwerd, Solothurn, Switzerland and came with his parents and siblings to the United States on the ship "America". They embarked from Bremen, Germany and arrived at Ellis Island in New York on 8 Apr 1922 and then proceeded by boat to New Orleans. From there they traveled to Texas by train. After he married Clara Rossow, they farmed at Peggy, TX. They purchased a 183 acre farm in Pawnee, TX, moved there in 1948, and built a new home where he resided for the rest of his life.

He was born Jan. 30, 1909, to Jacob and Rosa Brogli Wernli in Scheonenwerd, Switzerland. He moved to the Pawnee area from Switzerland in 1922 with his family. He was a farmer and rancher in the Pawnee area for most of his life and was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Kenedy.

He married Clara Rossow on Dec. 29, 1934, in Karnes City. She preceded him in death Oct. 6, 2001.

Walter was also preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Alvin Thompson; three brothers; and four sisters.

He is survived by his son, Walter H. Wernli and wife Gloria of Pawnee; daughters Lillie Mae Dienger and husband Carl of San Antonio and Hilda Margaret Smith and husband Dick of Burnet; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
