DIED--On April 1st, 1892 of LaGrippa at the residence of her son, H.E. [Henry Elias] Hendricks, White, S.D., Mrs. Malinda Martin, at the age of 74 years, [1?] month and 17 days.
Mrs. Martin was born in Madison Co., Ala., Feb. 2, 1818, her maiden name was Snyder [See note below]. On August 14, 1842 in Madison, Ala. she was united in marriage to David S. Hendrix by whom she bore two daughters [Lucinda Catherine and Mary Elizabeth] and four sons [William Elias, Daniel Stephen (also known as Benjamin), John Howard and Henry Ezekiel]. In 1850 with her husband she moved to Chippewa Falls, Wis., where he was drowned in 1857. In 1859 she married Mr. [Ezra] Martin who died in 1874. In April 1878 with her four sons she came to Dakota [Territory] and settled in Brookings county where they have since resided.
She was converted to practical Christianity at the age of 12 years and united with the Baptist church. On moving to Wisconsin, she, desiring to maintain active church relations and believing that Christianity is greater than any denomination, united with the Presbyterian church, it being the only organization in the place. On the organization of a class of the Methodist Episcopal church in Chippewa Falls in 1860 she transferred her membership to it, and remained an active, faithful member of that denomination to the day of her death. She never prepared for dying but for living. She believed the words of her Savior, "Because I live ye shall live also." "He that liveth and believeth in me shall never die." When asked just before she passed away what word she desired to leave she without hesitation said, "It is all right." To her the death of the body was a relief that she might enter upon her reward and be with him who had saved her in her youth and kept her amid all her trials and conflicts in life. Her children rise and call her blessed.

3) When applying for a license to marry her 2nd husband, Ezra Martin, in Wisconsin in 1859, she listed her father's name as "Baldwin Howard," and her mother's as "Elizabeth Howard."
4) Baldwin and Elizabeth Howard are reputed to have had a daughter named Malinda, of the age ascribed to Malinda Martin.
5) The Howards did have a neighbor family named Snyder, and it is conceivable the Howards raised orphaned children of that family. Though there is no legal record, informal "off the record" adoptions were common to the times. And the deed of personal property to his children Michael, Malinda and Temperance by Baldwin Howard late in his life might be explained as a means of giving legitimacy to a bequest that would not have come about automatically under state laws governing inheritance by family members.
