Catherine Mary ("Kate") Furlong was born on April 21, 1843 (some sources say 1844) in County Wexford, according to research by some of her descendants. She married Thomas Gentleman in Springfield, IL on April 26, 1870. According to the 1870 census, Thomas and Kate lived in Omaha where Thomas worked as a moulder and was later employed by Union Pacific Railroad, one of Omaha's largest employers. Katie and Thomas had seven children, three of whom died as infants. Those children who survived to adulthood included Clara Alice Gentleman Conlan, Emma Gentleman Larkin, John Aloysius Gentleman, and Philomena Gentleman Reed. Kate died in 1920.
