US Congressman, Boston Mayor. The 1790 graduate of Harvard College was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1793 and continued to practice law through 1804 when he was elected to the state senate. As a Federalist, he was elected to the US House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1805 until March 3, 1813. Reelected to the state senate, he served from 1813 until 1820. From the senate, he was elected to the state house for one term. Elected as the Mayor of Boston, he served from 1823 until 1828 and is credited with reorganizing the fire and police departments; creating a system to care for the city's poor; and rejuvenating downtown Boston. He became the president of Harvard College, a position he held from 1828 until 1845. His publications include, "History of Harvard University" 1836, "A Municipal History of Boston" 1852; and "A History of the Boston Athenaeum" 1851. The historical Quincy Market in downtown Boston was named in his honor.
