Dr. Bayley was a 1905 graduate, and Associate Professor of Surgery at University of Southern California, and Chief of Staff at Los Angeles County Hospital. He also maintained a private practice at the Professional Building, 1052 W. 6th Street, Los Angeles, specializing in women's surgical procedures and treatment.
In 1910, the Bayley family were living at the coal mining town of Dawson, New Mexico, owned and operated by the Phelps Dodge Corporation. Walter was employed as a surgeon.
He enlisted with the United States Marine Corps on 23 April 1918, served during WWI with the rank of Private, and honorably discharged on 24 July 1919 as a Captain.
The family resided at 1216 W. 48th Street, Los Angeles, from about 1918 through 1930.
Their only son, Walter Prescott Bayley, was killed in an accident involving a truck in 1920.
They resided at 4546 Circle Boulevard from about 1935 through 1942. Their last known residence was 3959 S. Norton Avenue, in Leimert Park, Los Angeles.
Dr. Bayley separated from his wife in October 1946, and filed for divorce in Nevada.
On 22 December 1947, he executed a new will disinheriting her by leaving half of his estate to Dr. Alexandra Partyka, his alleged mistress of five years.
Dr. Partyka had immigrated to the United States as a refugee in August 1940.
She was a graduate of the University of Vienna, Austria, and became an assistant to Dr. Bayley at his private practice.
In the weeks following the death of Dr. Bayley, his widow Ruth filed a lawsuit against Dr. Partyka contesting the will.
Mrs. Bayley charged that Dr. Partyka exerted undue influence through unnatural flattery, and feminine wiles, and that she threatened to reveal secrets concerning his medical practice, that would expose, and ruin his reputation. She also maintained that her late husband lived in constant fear that Dr. Partyka would disgrace him in his declining years, coercing him to abandon his family.
