Son of Dr. George Boardman Steel and Mary Ann Hartman. He practiced dentistry with his father. He married Ella Martin Harris (5 Nov 1868 - 30 Jan 1924) on 29 Apr 1886. In 1900, they were living in Monroe Ward, Richmond, Henrico Co., VA with their 9 year old son Charles Lowndes Steel, II. After his death, his wife and son went to live with her parents, James H. Harris and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ann Hardesty in Baltimore, MD. His son married, had children, and was a Col. in the US Army.
