Mrs. Edna M. Phend, 63, 412 South Elm Street, the wife of Gerald (Dufty) Phend, died at 11:20 a.m. Sunday at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, where she had been a patient for nine days in the special kidney unit. She first became ill on October 1 and had been hospitalized since that time with the exception of two weeks.
She was a native of Tunker and was born on August 13, 1917, a daughter of Therring and Nola M. Richman Mullendore. Her formative years were spent in Columbia City where she was educated in Columbia City High School.
Following her marriage to Gerald (Dufty) Phend in 1937, they established their home in Columbia City where they spent their entire married lives. Mrs. Phend was a former employee of the Blue Bell Co., and was last employed at Richard's Restaurant where she was in charge of the salad bar. When her health failed, she was forced to retire.
Surviving is her husband, who is a surgical patient at Lutheran Hospital. He submitted to surgery Sunday for the reduction of a fracture of his right hip suffered in a fall on the ice at his home. Other survivors include two sons, James S. Phend and Steven G. Phend, both at home; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Jane) Sroufe, R 5; two grandchildren, Tammy and Todd Sroufe; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Beachler, Park Terrace, City; Mrs. Richard (Ilene) Tieman, Solon Springs, Wis.
Her parents, two brothers, Glen Eugene and Richard Harold Mullendore, are deceased. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Smith and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Graham Kleespie officiating. Calling will be at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be in Greenhill Cemetery.
