Henrietta Pauline Phend, 72, of 409 S. Chauncey St., Columbia City, died at 6:30 a.m. today, July 18, at her home. Mrs. Phend had been in failing health for several years since suffering a stroke.
Her birth was on Aug. 1, 1911, in Wolf Lake, to Ward L. and Letha A. Hile Nelson. She was raised in Wolf Lake and came to Columbia City when she married Donald D. Phend, Sr. on Sept. 5, 1932, in Columbia City. She had lived at the present address for 54 years.
Surviving are her husband Donald; two sons, Richard Lee Phend of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Donald D. Phend of Columbia City; three daughters, Mrs. David (Pat) Katt of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Don (Judy) Parkison of Wolf Lake, and Mrs. Ben (Sally) Black of R 2, Leesburg; 19 granchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Harley Nelson of Grand Rapids, Mich., Hugh Nelson of Lexington Park, Md., Hurshell (Bud) Nelson of Blue Lake; four sisters, Hattie Falls of Columbia City, Helene Giant of Washington Township, Hilda Ann Camp of Waterloo and Mrs. Duane (Hazel) Bowman of Ashley.
Friends may call at Hollingsworth Memorial Chapel Thursday and Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be at the chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.
