What story lies behind the inscription on this cold stone?

Julianna grew up in a large farm family. According to son William about his parents: "When establishing a home of his own, he [David] was married to Miss Julia Ann Gardner. This lady was born in Cumberland County, Pa., and was the daughter of William Gardner, whose family consisted of twelve daughters and two sons." Her father had also served in the Revolutionary War.

Julianna had to deal with circumstances women of her generation faced. By law, women could not own property unless they either inherited or bought it AND remained single. Any property a woman brought to a marriage became the property of her husband and his heirs.

Julianna suddenly found herself a widow in her early 40's when her husband David died intestate of smallpox 3 February 1841. She had young children still at home and a daughter on the way, born three weeks after losing her husband.

David's property was auctioned off. The auction accounts list the items, winning bidders' names and the amount realized. One of the most poignant entries among the many male names is "widdow - one watch - $ 2.00", not even mentioning her by name. She had to buy her husband's watch!

Julianna remarried to Peter Troup, an old widower whose children were all grown and on their own. This provided a male head of household and a modicum of security for the short term. He died in 1848.

Julianna appears in the 1850 census as head of household under the surname Shatto living with her grown son Isaac Newton (who became a dentist) and her youngest daughter Ellen (through whom the Prayer and Meditation book passed along the way - click on photo). She is reported as illiterate.
