Alford
Funeral services for Weldon Alford, 79, of Rockdale were held Monday, July 7, 2008, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Chelf of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale.
Mr. Alford died Thursday, July 3, at his home in Rockdale.
A lifelong Rockdale resident, he was born on July 4, 1928, in Rockdale to Thomas Ewing and Carolina (Rose) Alford.
He married Jean McQuinn on June 12, 1948, in Rockdale.
Mr. Alford retired in 1987 from IGC/Texas Utilities where he was safety and security supervisor.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Rockdale.
Mr. Alford was a softball and baseball umpire for 60 years, calling games at many levels including the Southwest Conference and the NCAA. He also called basketball games.
Mr. Alford was a lifetime member of the ASA and the TASO and was a member of the Rockdale Sports Hall of Fame.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Johnnie, Clarence, Frank, Jamie, and his twin, Bill Alford; and three sisters, Luvenia Alford, Mary Tuma and Edith Brown.
Survivors are his wife Jean Alford of Rockdale; a son, Kenny Alford and wife Melissa of Portland; three daughters, Debbie Kaderka and husband Johnnie of Houston, Donna Smith and husband Owen of Hilltop Lakes, Patti Morgan and husband Randy of Milano; a sister, June Fenn of Livingston; seven grandchildren, Amber Robinson and husband Eric, Courtney McGee and husband Michael, Kelsey Morgan, Whitney Smith, Brandy Morgan, Kayla Alford and Jered Alford; and three great-grandchildren, Jace Robinson, Kyndal Robinson and Alli McGee; also, a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Johnnie Kaderka, Owen Smith, Randy Morgan, Eric Robinson, Michael McGee and Jared Alford.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 240 Green, Rockdale, TX 76567 or to the American Cancer Society.
