OBITUARY - Daily Tribune, Muscatine, Iowa, 28 May 1874
There passed away, Tuesday morning, one of the most venerable and distinguished of Muscatine's citizens. The Rev. Gordon Hayes died at the residence of his son, Mr. Daniel Hayes, of this city, at three o'clock, A.M. His illness dates many months back, and it was known to be seriously aggravated and intensified of late by an affliction in the form of a tumor; but his death falls upon us with startling suddenness. The venerable patient possessed a strength of mind and toughness of physical fiber and elasticity of spirits that seemed, altogether, to be able to defy the assaults of time. But recently, when we last had the pleasure of calling upon him, his mind betrayed the passing over of no obscuring clouds, and his grand geniality lighted up the circle around him with its accustomed beauty and splendor. But it is well. The brave old preacher, the enthusiastic scholar, the tender parent and teacher, has gone to meet his Master, Father, Friend.
The deceased was born in Granby, Conn., April 24, 1798. He graduated at Yale College in the class of 1823, with George Ashmun, Milton Badger and others who have become equally distinguished. Four years later he graduated after a full course at Andover Theological Seminary.
He first preached at Castleton, Vermont, but after a short time, was called to the Presbyterian church at Cambridge New York, as successor to Rev. Dr. Prime. Preferring to become a pastor of a Congregational church, he only supplied the pulpit for a year. While there he married Mary Dewey Fassett, of Bennington, Vermont. In July, 1829, he was called to settle over the Congregational church in Washington, Connecticut, remaining as its pastor for twenty three years.
In 1851 he assumed control of the Bennington Seminary, in Bennington, Vermont. He afterwards preached in Arlington, Vermont, then removed to the West, his children having all preceded him. The last nine years were spent with his sons in this city.
The family of the deceased has been remarkable for the prominence of many of its members. Charles G. Hayes, the eldest son, is the editor and publisher of 'Brain and Muscle.'-- The eldest daughter, Ada, was the wife of Prof. George Churchill, of Knox college.-- Mary E., the next in years, is the wife of W.P. Jones, formerly President of the North Western Female College; also consul to Canton, China, under President Lincoln.-- Edward and John have long been residents of this city. Lydia M. was Mrs. J.W W. Waugh, missionary to India, and died on her return visit to her native land.-- Daniel, the youngest, resides on the old family place on the Iowa City road, and it was at his residence that deceased breathed his last.
The funeral services were held at the residence, Wednesday, at one o'clock, and the remains were taken to Rosehill Cemetery, near Chicago, and laid by the side of her who "went before" some years ago.
