Gip was the son of Arthur Madison Alexander and Anna Smith. Around 1844 in Wayne County, Tennessee, he married Nancy Emmeline "Emmy" Martin, daughter of Henry and Nancy Martin. Gipson and Nancy left Wayne County, Tennessee, by ox wagon about 1851, settling in Big Flat, Searcy County (now Baxter County), Arkansas. They had the following children: James A., Mary Ann "Polly," Thomas Gipson, William Franklin "Frank," Nancy, Sarah Jane, Martin L., and Rebecca Marie.
