Margaretta Young Foster was borne May 25, 1828 in Danville, Columbia Co., Pennsylvania to Robert Foster (1787-1843) and Isabella (Hearst) Foster (1797-1852). She was one of at least five children who lived their early lives in Pennsylvania, before her parents moved the family to Ohio in 1840. In 1843, her father contracted Cholera and died March 6th, 1843. He was buried at Rickert Cemetery in Ashland Co., Ohio. The children and their widowed mother were living in Fairfield County, Ohio in 1850 when they decided to head Westward to the Oregon Territory. Their mother chose to live with relatives in Indiana and died there Apr 22, 1852. She is buried at Carlton Cemetery, Elkhart Co., Indiana.
The Foster family children came to Oregon in 1850, settling in Albany, Linn County, Oregon Territory. Margaretta married Daniel Harvey Bodine, a son of Pioneers, on Sep 13, 1857 in Albany, Oregon. Daniel was a Carpenter and also Farmed their Donation Land Claim which was near the Bodine, Burkhart, Foster and Froman families. Margaretta and Daniel were blessed with six children:
William Albert, b.1858
Oscar T., b.1860
Malinda Isabella, b.1861
Samuel Smith, b.1864
Daniel Harvey Jr., b.1865 and
James A., b.1867.
The children attended school and helped with the chores in their household, but their happiness was not to last. Daniel died on Sep 9, 1869 from Typhoid Fever and was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn Co., Oregon. The 1870 Census was taken in July, 1870. Margaretta was listed as "keeping house", but the Farm was in her care and shows a value of $8,100 with cash of $1174 (they were in the midst of harvest season). William, now age 12, and Oscar, now age 10, helped their mother with the farm. I am certain that her in-laws, who lived nearby, also helped with the crops and harvest. By 1880, she listed herself as "Farmer", as did William and Oscar. Malinda, now 18, was a school teacher. The younger children all helped with the chores both in the home and on the farm. Margaretta never remarried and died Nov 18, 1900, at the age of 72 yrs. She was buried near her husband at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Linn Co., Oregon.
May they all Rest Peacefully in Heaven.

The Bodine, Foster, Froman and Burkhart families married and are related to me. They were all Oregon Pioneers who settled in the Oregon Territory before statehood in 1859.
