Daniel was listed as a farmer on the census. He served as a Private in Co. K 31 AL Inf from Apr 1, 1862, to March 1863. On widow's application for relief filed by Martha Jane Evans Loftis, she stated that her father died during the Civil War. Original application can be found in Montgomery, Alabama. Muster rolls in Hoole Special Collections at Univ. of Alabama Library show D. W. Evans, age 37, enlisted on Apr 1, 1862, and died at Manchester, TN, on March 1863.

Tuskaloosa's Own, A Short History and Muster Roll of Confederate Units from Tuskaloosa County, Alabama, by Beasey S. Hendrix, Jr., index prepared by June Orr Reese, p. 40: D. W. Evans is listed in Roll of Co. F 41st Regiment AL Infantry organized at Tuscaloosa, AL, on Apr. 1, 1862, age listed as 37. Remarks column: Died at Manchester Tenn Mch 1863.

The memorial marker was placed in Big Creek Cemetery because actual burial place is unknown.
