James was a 1964 graduate of Orrville Senior High School, where he had been elected senior class president. A very avid sportsman all through high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation. He served in Vietnam as a dog scout. Returning to Ohio, he joined the Army Reserves while employed at Ohio Department of Transportation. Later he served in the Ohio National Guard 416th Engineering Division from which he retired after 20 years of service. He received several awards during his military career. He strongly felt it was a great honor to serve his country and did so proudly.
Jim leaves behind children, Andrea Marie Tracey and Paul Richard Tracey, both of Wooster, Paula Renee Tracey of Painesville and Joseph Tracey of Washington; seven grandchildren; his mother, Marilyn Jeffers of Apple Creek; a sister, Donna Tracey of Apple Creek; a nephew, Gary M. Hilton of Colorado; stepsisters, Vicky Rice of Lodi and Linda Harmon of Apple Creek; stepchildren, Rick Ott, John Hoff and Lisa Weitzel; and long-time friend and companion, Diane Stonecipher. He will be sadly missed and loved by all.
Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and mushroom hunting until health issues prevented him from such enjoyments. Jim was an avid Cleveland Brown, Indians and Ohio State Buckeye fan.
He loved his family deeply and became interested in genealogy. He spent the last several years doing research on both sides of the family tree. His cousin, Sandi Tracey Chaffin of Idaho, worked alongside him putting documented information together. Jim was working on putting a genealogy book together for the family.
He was preceded in death by his father; paternal grandparents, Elmer E. and Jessie Mae (Laughlin) Tracey of Fredericksburg; maternal grandparents, John Champion and N. Marie (Barker) Stoler of Wayne County; a stepson, Dean Hoff of Wooster; and his stepfather, Robert Jeffers.
